Playing at Old Deseret Village

Posted by Jonnycake White on Friday, July 25, 2008

Yesterday being July 24th, Utah's state holiday called "Pioneer Day" I got dressed up in my pioneer clothes, took my minstrel banjo and a small tambourine and a pair of rhythm sticks, and heeded up to This is The Place Heritage Park.  I volunteer there on a fairly regular basis, but this year, usually I am there in the evenings when there are very few people (guests) around.  Old Deseret Village (AKA Heritage Village) is the largest part of the park, which also features some monuments and a cafe/gift shop.  Anyhow, I made my way around to various homes, shops, and other sites in the village, sitting down to play "Oh Susanna", "Buffalo Gals" (sometimes I sing "Deseret Gals"), "Ring the Banjo", and other old time tunes while inviting the young folks to play the tambourine and clack the sticks together.  It was lots of fun.
