Midwest Banjo Camp

Posted by lori nitzel on Friday, June 27, 2008

was tons of fun! There are some truly wonderful people who play the banjo. Well, and there are a few who aren't totally friendly. Anyway, I found this pic on the MBC site -

http://www.midwestbanjocamp.com/2008/2008photos/62.html

that's me and Bob Carlin. :) (I'm not the most photogenic person around, btw.) He's amazing. What I really love about him is his knowledge of banjo history and culture. He throws that stuff into his teaching, which makes being a listener and learner lots of fun. And he's freaking hilarious.

I *heart* Joe Newberry. What a lovely, lovely man. He's SO nice and helpful, and just an all-around awesome person. Not to mention, he's an incredible musician and songwriter and if you don't have his CD (Two Hands) you're totally missing out. You can find it on CDBaby. Seriously, GO GET IT NOW. :) Anyway, my dream is to be him (well, a female version) someday...

Others who were awesome: Adam Hurt (what a nice guy and a GREAT teacher), Jens Kruger (had a crazy late night conversation with him about playing for others that really made me think), and Ken Perlman (I left every workshop with him with my fingers hurting - gawd, he's good at chording and that stuff up the neck).

I'm skipping the Indiana Fiddlers' Gathering this weekend, sadly. There are a few good reasons for not going - two of which are gas prices and my current mosquito exasperation. With all of the flooding, the mosquito population has skyrocketed here in Wisconsin and I have no doubt that Indiana is having a similar problem. Normally, I would bite the bullet and DEET myself every hour or two but now that I am preggers, I'm a bit hesitant to do that. So...gonna clean my basement this weekend instead. Has to be done, unfortunately. :P

Hi Lori!

Glad you had a great time!  I've been to American Banjo Camp three times and loved it each time.  I skipped last year, but plan to go again this year (largely because Reed Martin is coming out this year).  I'll second the recommendations for Joe Newberry and "Two Hands".  Great CD!  Also for Adam Hurt.  Adam did a workshop and house concert with Beth Hartness at my house last fall and it was way good!

Cheers, Scott

Great write-up, Lori.  It sounds like you had a great tiem and met some fine people.  I had a wonderful workshop with Adam in May.  Thanks for reminding me about Joe Newberry's CD.

The music must have been great despite the mozzies.  I am alergic to them flying buzz bugs!
