Charlie Medley died on Sunday at the age of 86. Charlie was a fiddler in the Monday night volunteer contra dance band in recent years. Charlie was a fine fiddler and played in numerous groups over the years, including on local TV shows with such Louisville-area performers as Randy Atcher, Tiny Thomale, and Shorty Chesser on "Hayloft Hoedown" on WHAS-TV.
Charlie was very encouraging to me when I began playing banjo with the contra dance band about 4 or 5 years ago. He helped me feel very welcome in a new setting. he was one of 3 regular fiddlers who played for the dances and was really adept at playing harmonies to what the other two fiddlers were playing.
Last night, his passing was announced at the contra dance, and we had a moment of silence. I think Charlie might have preferred that we play the "Tennessee Waltz" but it wouldn't have been quite the same without him.
It was a pleasure meeting and getting to know Charlie.
