Im on day 3 of teaching myself to play this instrument.
I have absolutely no experience with stringed instruments. I only learned to play the piano as a child to appease my parents.
I bought an open back ortega 5 string monday evening. Not on a whim, but because I've wanted to learn to play banjo since i was little. I have some extra time and energy lately, as well as a reason to celebrate, so i went for it.
I love the sounds it makes, it's mystic but also silly, playful but eary. I've always felt connected to this sound, i can't really explain it.
So I've been practicing for 3 days. The tips of my fingers on my left hand are numb. I've got 2 rolls down and I'm working on speeding them up. I've learned to read tabs, a surprisingly efficient way to note music, and I'm practicing moving my hand along the frets.
Yesterday i made myself a shoulder strap out of scrap fabric - needs some adjustment.
I'm having a great time with this.
I've been told that there are bluegrass sessions that are held in Hessen, Germany. Maybe I'll make it to one this summer.

Welcome to the world of bluegrass. Feel free to ask questions on our forum(s). Most people here are very helpful and can give lots of good information and help and a few will mislead you so be careful. Forums are located on the left hand side of the page. Scroll to appropriate forum and click on it, then in upper left hand side, click on post new topic, give you topic a subject, ask your question(s) and click post comment.
As you progress, take a look at our tab forum. All our tabs are FREE but you need the correct software to download, print, play and listen to unless the tab is pdf. You can download TefView and download, etc any tabledit tab. Go here to download correct software. tabledit.com/tefview/index.shtml.
