Banjo string gauges

Posted by Fred4Aces on Wednesday, September 20, 2023

A newbie question for sure...

When replacing banjo strings...they seem to come in several gauges to a pack....How do you know which one goes where on the instrument?  Thanks.

Are you restringing a 5 string or 4 string? That would make a difference.

If you're restring a 5 string resonator, going from the 1st string to the short 5th string, you'd probably have # 9, 10, 11, 12, 9 or something like that, according to whether you're using light, medium or heavy strings.

I'm not sure on a 4 string, so someone else will have to answer that one.

My suggestion: post your question on the appropriate forum (bluegrass for 5 string, Irish or Jazz forums for 4 string).

In upper left hand side click on post new topic, give your topic a subject, ask your question(s) and either subscribe to the topic or click post comment and check back for answers.
