Attention Banjo People. I am brand new to banjo and off to a rocky start. I am attempting to teach my self to play with the help of the internet, and lesson #1 was to learn to tune the damn thing. I already broke a string and went thru the arduous task of replacing it. Now I am back in the same place where I was just before I broke the string. TRYING TO GET STRING #3 TO TUNE TO G! I am using a snark and it is at F# but it is so tight that I fear it will snap again. What the F#*K am I doing wrong? All the other strings have tuned fine. HELP!
Frustrated in the Carolinas.

It's possible you may not be tuning to the correct NOTE when you try to tune. Go here: youtube.com/watch?v=Dfeli92imYM and you will hear the correct note (tone) for each string. See if that helps.
Also, what kind of strings are you using; i.e., light, medium, heavy. That makes a difference as to how easy/hard it is to tune. If you're using light strings, those are easier to break but also easier to fret when you're first learning.

Tune it using the 2nd or 4th string not for note.
