choking the strings??

Posted by Homegrowngrass on Thursday, February 21, 2019

Got a question hope someone can help me with. How does Ron Block choke the strings so much in his playing and never seems to go out of tune while playing? Most the time when I choke the strings while playing I get out of tune a little bit. I've read and tried rubbing the lead of a pencil in the grooves in the nut helps some but not enough.

If your banjo goes out of tune when you choke the strings, it might be the set up of your banjo, the way you choke the strings, or the banjo itself. You don't say what type of banjo you have, but i it's an entry level, entry level banjos end to go out of tune quicker and easier than the more expensive ones. If you have a more expensive model, it may be the setup that needs tweeking.
