Stuffing and tone

Posted by AndyW on Monday, September 24, 2018

After running through my repertoire once I decided my wrists were too tired from plumbing work this morning to do too much playing.

So instead I decided to record my two banjos and check out their tone with various stuffing options.

First thing was that with no stuffing the tone I heard on the recording was significantly different[in a good way] than what I was hearing behind the banjo.

Second thing was that [very surprisingly as behind the banjo they sound completely different] my beater saga type aluminium rim banjo didn't sound too much different from my Gretsch Dixie Special.  The aluminium pot banjo only really fell over unstuffed as there was occassional bouts of what could only be resonant frequencies where the sustain was far beyond normal producing a bell like note. Once stuffed that was removed.

So I've kinda lost my resistance to the aluminium pot sound, the only thing now making me prefer the Gretsch is the slightly shorter scale and the frailing scoop improve its playability.
