A piece of advice I've heard from a number of banjo players is to learn everything on the foggy mountain banjo album. I haven't done that yet, so I'd like to make that my goal for next year. Conveniently, there are 12 tunes on the album, so I can focus on one tune per month. At the end of each month I'll post a video of the tune I've been working on.
I intend to try to work the tunes out by ear (firstly from Bennett Sullivan's playing of the main breaks -- I'd like to learn the tunes directly from the album, but I don't seem to have the ear for that yet). I'll seek out tabs for those parts I can't work out by ear.
I hope to post more than just the main break from the tune, but I suspect that sometimes that's all I will achieve.
I'm not sure what order I'll post the tunes in. We'll have to see. I'll probably start with Fireball Mail.

That sounds great bellf! What a great goal to set for yourself.
I can't wait to hear aobut your creative journey, the ups, the downs, how slogging it out gives you some purpose, and gives you that satisfaction of learning a few more bars.
It will be great to see your uploaded songs at the end of each month.
Personally I would love to hear the ways in which you teach yourself to listen and then play by ear. That sounds truly fascintating to me.
