Carl Arcand Tubaphone

Posted by banjoquebec on Tuesday, January 3, 2017

I took two old banjos to Carl Arcand's shop in Ulverton Québec to have them set up. I came home with a brand new Tubaphone he built and it is fantastic. The workmanship is superb. It has the highest quality parts available to complement the double ply sugar maple pot and birdseye maple neck. The mop inlays are lovely. The price was really reasonable. It has that great throaty mellow sound that Tubaphones are prized for. I recommend his banjos, new and used. I spent a few hours in his shop and played seven or eight banjos, all were great. Carl takes great pride in his work and his banjos are testament to his dedication and skill. If you visit, you will receive a warm welcome and learn a lot about banjos and banjo construction and repair. I could not be more pleased with my new banjo and I have owned a lot of banjos over the past fifty years.I was not even planning to buy a banjo until I played this one.

I'd love to see your banjo, and I see we're the same age. I get to northern VT now and then. Any chance you were at UVM in the early 60's?

Hi John,
There are good photos of it on Carl's website which is Second Life Banjos--it is the Tubaphone he made and is now marked as SOLD. It is a beauty. I can't imagine anothe maker who would sell something of this quality so reasonably. He has $900 worth of hardware in it and there is beautiful inlay on the neck. He mostly repairs old banjos but makes a few one at a time, no mass production methods are used. My main other banjo is a Bart Reiter Professional based on a Bacon banjo. It has the internal resonator with F holes in the back.I was not at UVM in the sixties but probably would have liked it there. I am originally from Virginia but moved to Troy Vermont in 2004 where I live just a few hundred yards from the border raise a few livestock, do some woodworking, and play Old Time music on fiddle, banjo, and mandolin. If you are in the area maybe we can play a few tunes together.

I bought a reconditioned Slingerland May Bell banjo-uke from him last year, and could not be happier with it. His work is impeccable, and he's Canadian!!

Everything instrument I saw in his shop was first rate. It is inspiring to meet someone who takes so much pride in his work and is also really nice.
