Prewar Gibson Banjos are like Gilligan's Island

Posted by Smelly Old Gibby on Sunday, November 20, 2016

To me, pre-war Gibson banjos are like the characters on Gilligan's Island:

Ladies First:

Mary Ann - she has always been my personal favorite.  She is a OPF style 3/75 Flathead.  She is rich in personality, and there is just something about her that you love and cant quite describe - a sweetness.  Classy and beautiful, yet understated in a way.  From the first time you interact, you know that she is a dependable keeper and you want to keep her for the long haul.

Ginger - what a beautiful girl - glitzy and glam.  She is the lightweight flathead "sparkle style six".  She can be great, but sometimes undependable.  There are several that lust over the her, but after a while, her looks are not as noticed, and I find myself longing for more substance.  She is great to wear on your arm, and others will oooh and ahhh... but, when you are alone, something is lacking to me.... I am not sure how to describe it.

Mrs. Howe - has all the best money can buy and is dripping with jewels.  She is the Florentine - highly valuable, but a little gawdy to some.  But still, she is not an embarrassment by any means.  People may roll their eyes, but they will still come close to see her.

The Gentlemen:

?The Professor - smart, savvy, and distinguished.  He is the OPF Granada Flathead - not overly "made-up", but a good looking chap, and something about him is very charismatic.  I feel good knowing he is around.

Mr Howe - Like Mrs Howe, he is valuable... but he is even more pretentious.  He is the PW "All American".  He is a rare bird, and might be fun to own, but you would not take him out to a jam, and your play time would be limited for fear that a bump or bruise would cost you.  If you took him to a jam, people would talk and question your worthiness to be with such a rich man.  And, although Howe is slightly obnoxious - rest assured that they are mostly jealous.

The Skipper - This heavy fella would have to be a Top Tension.  He is nice, but often tubby.  It's hard to put the skipper in situations where he will really shine, but once in a while he is brilliant - sometimes without knowing it.

Gilligan - sweet and dopey, you can't help but to love him.  He is the Ball Bearing.  He is not often accepted as an equal to the others, but he cant be ignored.  He doesn't have the power or the looks of the others, but he is sweet and fun.
