Clawhammer Banjo in 8 Essential Steps - A Video Series

Lesson 7: Pluck Off!

Okay folks, we're nearing the last of our eight essential steps, so hopefully you're bursting with anticipation with the end so clearly in sight. In this penultimate installment, we're continuing to work on those wonderful fretting hand techniques -- the ones that let us steal extra notes from our banjo without having to break the clawhammer motion. Last time it was the hammer on. This time....the pull off.

Or should I say, "pluck off."

You see, though this technique is commonly referred to as a "pull off", that moniker often ends up giving folks the wrong impression about how this one should be done. So, in this lesson, we'll start with a basic review of the same and alternate string pull off in which we'll separate the truth from myth and legend, fact from fiction, wheat from chaff, and raisin from bran, and then conclude with a couple exercises to solidify your skills (including the long awaited second part of our tune from the last lesson).

The written supplement for this lesson can be downloaded here. If you'd like the written supplements for future lessons sent to you when they're up, and if you'd like to be emailed the final e-book with all 8 lessons and tabs at the conclusion of the series, then sign up here.

You might want to stress or remind your viewers that the real reward comes when you actually DO practice each day with a metronome. Something i have just realised 3 days ago because I couldn't keep up with your level of tutoring. Much closer to success now thank you. I am totally committed to this now and seeing very real progress.
Love your work mate, please don't ever stop! Ever. Rep it, Case

Haha, good point - that's one reason I created the metronome playlist in case folks didn't have one, but as you say probably good for me to explicitly state this. And, don't worry about whether you can keep up - I intended for folks to go at their own pace (especially in the later episodes, where the techniques and exercises may present more of a challenge initially). Thanks again for the feedback!

Yeah, me too casey050. I totally agree with the importance of daily practice, especially the basic stuff, the hand movement and the basic stroke, that's where the main difficulties with clawhammer lies, in my opinion. If you've got that down, everything else will follow. Thanks for putting the emphasis on that, Josh! What I mean is that I'm also seeing real progress. To the point that I'm eagerly awaiting the 8th installment. When is it coming? I can't wait!

We ended up pushing the 8th installment back a week, so it'll be out Oct 13. Thanks for your patience!
