Chord Nerd Tip #8: A Jazzy Minor Blues Progression

Posted by Banjolio on Monday, April 14, 2014

Last time we looked at this very basic minor blues progression:

||: Cm        |                  |                  |                 |

|    Fm        |                 | Cm            |                 |

|    Ab7       | G7           | Cm            | Ab7     G7:||

Now, let's jazz it up a little by changing the minor chords to minor 7th chords, and adding a little extra flourish in the fourth measure:

||: C-7        |                 |                            |G-7b5 C7|

|   F-7         |                 | C-7                    |                 |

|   Ab7        | G7            | C-7                    | Ab7 G7:||

Here it is again, with a set of possible chord shapes to use:

||:      |                |                | |
|        |                |        |               |
|       |       |       |:||

You can use the 1-4 string swap to add variation to the C-7, and the first form of the Ab7 and G7 chords.

If you want to hear and see it played, check out this video:

Warning: I recorded this video a while ago to support my chord book, so I babble on a bit, but it does show this progression played with a little extra chord commentary.

If you want a fancier/jazzier version next time, let me know.

Have fun with this, and try different picking and even strumming patterns with it.
