Review of Slow-Downer Software (Amazing Slow Downer, Song Surgeon, Transcribe!)

Posted by Goldstarman on Monday, March 3, 2014

I’m reviewing three different programs that slow down music in order to transcribe things such as solos. The three programs are Song Surgeon 4, The Amazing Slow Downer and Transcribe. All of these programs work very similar and strive to do one thing and that is to slow down the songs and solos to learn. They do have a lot of other features though that come in handy. After trying each of the three programs I can say they all get the job done and all do it well but I did find myself going back to one over and over and that was he Amazing Slow Downer. All three are pretty easy to use.  To open a file go to file and then find the song or file you want to open and it’s that simple.

Song Surgeon 4 does have some very nice features such as imputing a URL from you tube and then being able to take that file and slowing it down. Again I still find the ASD so much easier to use. You can slow the tune down or speed it up but hitting the arrows for Speed, or you can do the same for pitch which is a very useful tool that I use every day. I practice with Cd’s every day and to retune the banjo for each one is very tiring but with this program you can change the pitch of the song to match your banjo and it is very fast.

On each one you can adjust the Eq to get the most out of whatever instrument you want to hear. Another great thing about the ASM is you can change the pitch or speed by very small increments instead of 10-or 25% ones.  You can also single out phrases to learn and save them and you can do this in most of the programs. While most of the programs will do the same things none do it as easy as the Amazing Slow downer.

I see you mention Song Surgeon will download from YouTube. Does it slow down the video or does it strip the audio track from it and slow that down? Can you load up any video file you have or will it only grab it from an external source? I was looking for something that did video which is why I went with Transcribe! but if Song Surgeon will handle video as well I may take a look at it.
