So, after obsessively researching for the last 3 weeks, I finally settled on an inexpensive Pilgrim open back banjo. I really wanted to start on something like a Deering Goodtime but the choice here in NZ is limited and import duty is quite a lot, besides, I couldn't really afford one!
I brought it home today and have been watching lessons on YouTube all afternoon. I found some great ones by Mark Wardle on 3 finger bluegrass style and was getting on OK but then I found some clawhammer ones by Cathy Fink and I think I might prefer clawhammer... Not sure if it is normal to test them out a bit to decide, but I think I'll try them both for a few days and then decide which I will concentrate on.
One major thing had to happen though - I had to cut my lovely nails off my left hand :( they just weren't helping with the chords! Dolly Parton (my hero) has seriously long nails and seems to manage it alright but she is a total legend!
