Home after a long summer

Posted by Clawdan on Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Yes, it was a long summer on the road. 4 months with only being home about 36 hours at the end of May! Home in Yuma for a couple of weeks before heading out to the Northwest for a couple of shows and workshops up there. Here are the details as far as I know at the moment. I'll be driving from Yuma leaving on the 18th September to arrive in Eugene, OR by the 21st. If anyone is able or interested in hosting a house concert on the way up to or down from Seattle (taking I-5) please contact me by email. I'd love to be able to see you and work along the way.

BTW, I'll also be teaching in San Diego again this year. Wednesday September 11 is the first date, but it is sold out. I may be able to get more time available on the 12th so email me if you are interested.

I'm hoping to be home in Yuma for the month's of November and December (well, except for the monthly or bi-weekly trip to San Diego) and am taking skype students as  well as welcoming students to come to the home. An hour, a day or more. Let me know. Hope to see many of you on this last long trip of the year. Thanks for all of your support this year.

Saturday September 28

4 and 6 PM

Old Time Fiddle Workshop(s) at Kennedy Violins

4 - 5:30 PM - Bow use for intermediate players - Bow use is one of the most important skills in turning notes into music. When to up and down bow, when to pause or add emphasis to a stroke. How DO you figure out where that rhythm comes from? We’ll look at all of this and more as we explore how the bow impacts the tune.

6 - 7:30 PM - Learning a tune without paper and making it your own - While most of the old time players didn’t play off paper, many could “read the dots”. Most of us today learn with written music but while it is a useful and important tool, the “notes” on paper are not music. Music comes from playing what you hear and feel so we will pick a tune to learn, learn it by ear and create variations based upon each of our experience and skill and playing what we WANT to hear.

Price: $30 each workshop; $50 for both.

Thump it then thump it again

10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Basic double and drop thumb technique will be the focus of this skills based workshop. Here’s your chance to move into clawhammer’s most important rhythmic skill. Make great leaps or start from scratch. We’ll pick a good solid tune to work with to put the technique into practice.

Bring Tunes to Life - Post Tab Tune Development

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Okay, you can play “purdy good” and get around a tune with or without tab in a way that lets us know you get it but what comes next? Here is your chance to work on making a tune your own, bring it to life and develop they skill you need to play the tune and not just the notes.

$40 each (COMBO $70 for both workshops)

Dan will also will do PNWFS Concert, Oct 5, 7:30-9:30pm, Free/Donations at Couth Buzzard Books Espresso Buono Cafe, 8310 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, 436-2960.

Sunday October 6

12:15 - 4:30 PM

Repertoire for Old Time Fiddle

12:15 PM - 2:15 PM

One of the fiddler’s primary jobs in old time music is to know the tunes and be able to find and develop new ones all the time. This tune based workshop will be aimed primarily at the old time fiddlers looking to build their tune repertoire as well as their skill at making an old time tune sound like, well, an old time tune! Other instruments see the next workshop.

Playing Together

2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Okay, so you know all the tunes, but want to play together with OTHER musicians. You start and realize, you have different versions. Or you never played with a fiddler or banjo player before. What to do? Come work on what it takes to play “TOGETHER” instead of against each other.

While intended primarily for Old Time Fiddle and Banjo players, Mandolin, Guitar and Bass players (and other old time stringband musicians) are welcome to come be “part of the band!”

We will work on new tunes together as well as play with tunes you know.

$40 each (COMBO $70 for both workshops)

Dan will also will do PNWFS Concert, Oct 5, 7:30-9:30pm, Free/Donations at Couth Buzzard Books Espresso Buono Cafe, 8310 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, 436-2960
