Day Two

Posted by cabreco on Friday, February 1, 2013

My Boom Diddy needs practice. I'm hoping that I'm not to old to learn banjo & that my muscle memory at 53 years of age, doesn't have Alzheimer's. (lol)

To anyone reading, diligently practicing, how much would be a reasonable amount of time to properly get the right hand motions? It's a BIG difference from guitar.

Hello Cabreco. Do you have a book to work from? Like you I have just started and I'm a few years older. I don't know what a reasonable amount of time would be to get down the CH/OT strum, but for me it came within a couple of hours of practice.

Here are a few things that have been helpful to me: Read everything you can about starting out here at BHO. People here readily share their knowledge; Get a book that comes with a CD or DVD. Again, very knowledgeable people have their favorites and are not in lockstep agreement; so I tried to find what I thought could get me the best start for what I want to be able to do; I've had the greatest help and feedback from my beautiful wife who fortunately has some musical knowledge and helps me out and gives me feedback; One trick that has helped me is that on some of the beginning CD tracks that came with my teaching book I "looped" the track and let it play over and over until I could catch up. Once I had that figured I could shut it down and then try to continue from memory.

Don't forget to visit Old Woodchuck's website and download his Rocket Science Banjo. Also be sure to read anything he or Dan Levenson or R.D. Lunceford write on this site.

Cabreco, I was 58 when I started. Use all available resources in the BHO to learn to paly the banjo. Find out what works for you and go for it!

Thanks BanjoFlyBoy & Oalbrets for the encouragement, I'm actually enjoying it a lot. (ok it may be the wife torture I'm enjoying with my relentless practicing but she's been supportive) lol

Wyorzark, I downloaded a book by Patrick Costello, The How & Tao of old time banjo and have been looking at videos on you tube. I appreciate the RSB info. It's funny, being retired now affords me a lot of time to dedicate to this. I haven't been this gung- ho since I was a kid learning guitar.

I have to look through this forum well. I'm like a kid in a candy store!

Andy
