Our first paid gig

Posted by TheGil on Thursday, January 3, 2013

After about eighteen months of rehearsing and doing free gigs/open mics our band finally played to a small house in Sacramento for a few dollars. Overall a pretty good experience judging from the feedback of my friends, but I feel it could have been better. We had an inexperienced house-provided sound guy who didn't seem to know what he was doing. This resulted in some lousy sound and failure to hear vocals and instruments. I tripped over a cord and broke the input to my amp which forced me to play direct into the PA. Each of us made errors in the music that caused awkward pauses. But overall I feel I nailed many of the banjo parts and my vocals were pretty good. In general, a learning experience and not a bad one judging from the audience reaction to our music. Time to move on and grow. I really like the idea of in-ear monitors and the group playing into a limited number of mics. TheGil

But you got paid! For a lot of professions, that elevates you from amateur to professional.

I suppose you're right Charley, and I didn't even think about that!
