Mrs. Hum. Please accept my deepest sympathy. What a shock this is. Even though we live in different parts of the world, we were brothers in the music. That made the world smaller. It seemed like Dave was chugging along along making and sharing music that we all enjoyed. He was such an inspiration as I know the difficulty he went through to make his music and in spite of that he made it so exceptionally well.
We are so sorry for the loss you and your family are going through.

I was very hesitant to click on this blog entry when i saw the title... and the name "Hum"... and feared the sad news.
I'm a bit shaky as i type this... Dave's music and his humble unassuming disposition were a huge influence on me... and judging by the number entries thus far, many others as well.
That such a fine musician... that shared his joyful passion out in the streets, amongst the pedestrian folk... and took interest in rank amateurs like myself with his kind words, is a testament to his utterly good nature.
Your husband was a sparkling gem... completely unique... and i will always think every time i play one of his CD's in my car on tune on my IPhone.
Peace to you and your family... a great loss... but a wonderful legacy. Ken.

I've greatly appreciated Dave's skills and his penchant for busking... it's led to so many inspiring videos of him "playing out" in public that I can't help but believe he inspired many to do the same.

I always feature a video in the email newsletters I send out for the Banjo Hangout. To pick a video I'll typically run a search in the BHO video archive to find recent video posted with a lot of likes. Dave's videos were always at the top of the list--it got so bad that I had to purposely pick other people's videos because he would have been featured every time! :-)

Today's newsletter is going out with a video from Dave featured yet again, though. Our condolences, Mel--from the BHO family to yours.

Mel
I am deeply sorry to hear of the loss that your family has recently suffered. I had the joy of listening/watching Dave play - both on his own and during his time with the Hucks'.
To have gone through what he had, and then to create a different way of playing, so as to be able to carry on - WOW.
Dave was, and still will be, an inspiration to us all, especially us apprentices of the trade! God has been spoilt this year. There will be one hell of a concert in heaven - Dave playing alongside Earl Scruggs & Barney McKenna.
My thoughts are with you. Will

I was shocked when I heard of the news cause I was listening to his latest video post just recently. I always love his unique picking style and how he turned a devestating chalenge to his hand almost taking his ability to play and turning it around and having the courage to re-learn a new way of picking with a limiting hand is one of the most inspirering thing I had ever seen. He truly had the love of music and banjo and will always remain one of my banjo Idols. My dad would tell me when I was a boy that when special courageous people who pull through enormous chalenges and still come out victorious earn a special star in heaven and in this case I truly believe that Dave has earned a gigantic bright star in heaven! my condolences to the family. Once I told him that I hoped all those people appreciated the great gift they were receiving and that he was worthy to play in Carnegie Hall. Dave's music has the power to cheer me up. He must have been a great guy with great character and I could tell that he was surrounded by devoted family. I live in Southampton and have seen Dave play on the City streets many times, on his own and with his great Band 'The Huckleberries' He always put on a great show and never failed to attract an appreciative crowd (me among them).
He has left us at Banjohangout with a wonderful legacy of his talent via the video/audio clips he posted on the site so he sure won't be forgotten.
The South of England will be a sadder place now as Dave's Banjo has fallen silent, I still can't believe it.
