Sheesh. It's been over a year since I've done an update!
Well, the housing market really bit us in the backside.
When we finally got our house ready to sell, we found it had lost another $50K of value (in less than a year) and we were now "under water" in it.
As we don't have the cash to take to a closing, we called the mortgage company and explained that Carmen's being out of work and my income being pretty much limited to Social Security, we were having trouble paying the mortgage. Their response? "We can't help you, because you've not missed any payments or even been late."
So, to make it easier for them, we simply stopped paying the mortgage. We figured that we had made a bad investment, but then, so had they. Then we moved out of the house in August. We still talk to them every week or so:
Mortgage Company (MC) "You're behind."
Us: "Yes, we know."
MC: "Are you going to pay?"
Us: "No. What are our options?"
MC: "We can't do anything for you because you've missed payments."
Hmmm...we seem to be in a recursive loop! They couldn't help us when we were current, and they can't help us now, because we're in arrears.
Meanwhile, we're happily ensconced in another house, and have taken quite a few nice trips with the RV. Full-time seems a bit difficult at the moment, but it remains our goal. We've been actively downsizing our life and are really enjoying it.
Who knows? Perhaps we will soon be true vagabonds...doesn't sound too bad right about now.

Still a driveway big enough for RV parking waiting for you guys in Kansas... plus beds, showers, banjos and wine inside the house.
