The song "Simple Gifts" comes to my mind around Thanksgiving time. So I searched and found a nice, simple (no pun intended) version of the song at www.wowrec.com. So for the last several days I have been plucking away at it. My hopes were that it would be good enough for a another "public performance" but I think that was wishful thinking. That does not matter to me, because I am not playing this song as much for public consumption as I am for my own person enjoyment. I really like the tune and it mentally and spiritually prepares me for Thanksgiving (which has become my FAVORITE of holidays!)
The preacher side of me wants to take this ball and run with it, but instead I am holding back....a little.
I will say this. I sometimes feel we live in a nation of discontent. People standing in line (like the commercial) for the latest phone. Having a better TV...with bigger and clearer picture. Upgrading from a DVD to Blu-Ray seems like a no brainer to people (I really can't see the difference)! Our cars...our homes...our jobs! We are caught in a spirit of UPGRADE because we are discontented. To be honest I struggle with my own desires of wanting the bigger and/or better. I wander through the BHO classifieds looking at the various banjos (that I know are well beyond my budget) and I contemplate upgrading. Take a look at my picture...it surely does not look like I perfected the ability to pass by the buffet or the super-sized meal. We live in a nation (including myself) of discontent!
"'Tis a gift to be simple! 'Tis a gift to be free!"
So this Thanksgiving...with banjo in my hands...and "Simple Gifts" lofting in the air...I will be counting my blessings....doing my best to be content....resisting the urge to upgrade material possessions.
In His Grip, Jim

I agree with you. And we must remember: A "simple" gift, can be a big gift. - When people ask me, what I want for Birthday/Christmas I always answer: The best thing you can give me, is a thing you have done yourselves. Thats a big gift for me.
