This past Sunday the Portland Every Sunday Square Dance wrapped up a successful first season with a benefit dance for JOIN. We had a great time and raised a good chunk of change for a worthy cause. Here's a video clip from last Sunday's dance:
One thing the dance organizers did this year that was real effective was to recruit a second "band" each week to play in the foyer/bar area so folk saw and heard live music right away as they entered the hall and when they took a break from dancing to visit with friends. I put "band" in quotes, because these were often just pick-up bands from within the local old time music community. But it was always a lot of fun and contributed a festival feel to the weekly dance. Here's a video clip of Caroline Oakley, Pete Leon, and Kevin Sandri playing one of these foyer gigs last December:
The dance is now on hiatus for the summer while everyone fans out for music festivals, barbeques in the park, and vacations. I'll be heading out to Weiser for a few days on Wednesday. Hope you all have a great summer!
