If you've read my previous entries, you know I recently traveled from Okinawa to Tokyo for a few weeks of work, and while there I attended several performances of different bluegrass bands in a club in the Ginza. I mentioned to one of the musicians during one of their breaks that I can't find any bluegrass on Okinawa. She sent an e-mail last week with the name of a friend of hers who runs a bluegrass jam a couple of times a month here on the island. Long story short, I've gotten in touch with him, and am awaiting my invitation to my first jam!

That's great, Jay. Let us know how it turns out. I'm not even close to jamming yet..... lol.

How interesting! I lived in Japan (near Tokyo) for 3 years and found the traditional music interesting and some of it was very likeable....I remember the Bon Odori music in particular (in addition to the fabulous drumming groups). I'd be very interested in hearing a blend of American bluegrass and Japanese traditional music. Real Japanese-style bluegrass instead of Japanese musicians playing American bluegrass.

Jay (or anyone else for that matter), I am hoping you can help me. I work on Kadena AB at their Youth Center. I am planning a community event the end of October that is going to be set up kind of like a Fall Harvest Festival you would see on the east coast in the Appalachian Mountains. One of the key components I am looking for is a Bluegrass band. I was excited to find your post. Do you of any bands, or just anyone that is good, that woudl be willing to come play at the event. It has the potential to be a paid gig. If you could please contact me with any information you might have at 634-0500 or geoffrey.rhinehart@us.af.mil I would greatly appreciate it.

Jeff,
The guys I've been jamming with are just what you are looking for, and called "The Sometimes Bluegrass Band". My wife will call the guys tomorrow and find out what they say! Great hearing from you!
Jay

Awesome! If you could hook me up with their contact info that would be awesome. Will have to come up with some kind of "finders fee". Are you atatched to a base here? Thanks for the help!
