The first month with my new banjo

Posted by hdplayer on Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Hi.  My name is Susan and I'm a banjo newbie. Tomorrow will mark the fourth week since the arrival of my new banjo.  I must admit it was with a fair amount of apprehension that I even ordered the thing.  I don't have a teacher, I'm learning from YouTube videos and David Holt's instructional DVDs.  So far I feel I'm doing OK, considering this my first attempt with a strummed, fretted instrument.  I'm a reasonably competent hammered dulcimer player, but I'll be the first to admit HDs are not jam friendly instruments.  So a few years back I took up the fiddle and discovered a love for Old Time music.  Playing fiddle by ear comes somewhat naturally, but I never seem to progress beyond the intermediate level because I tend to only play during the summer months at festivals and such.  By the end of each summer I don't sound too bad, but then it gets put away until the next spring rolls around.  I know that playing with others is the key to becoming a better, more confident player.  So I'm deliberately and actively seeking opportunities to play more during the winter months.  I also love to sing, especially the old love songs and ballads.

So why the banjo? why now?  I've been listening to and watching really good players for years at camps and festivals.  I fell in love first with the rhythmic, percussive sound, then the primitiveness and the complexity of playing styles.  I love it as a haunting accompaniment for ballads and the drive behind the fiddle for dancing.  And then, I guess I reached the age that I realized this is not a dress rehearsal.  It's time to stop "just" watching and PLAY banjo - and play more fiddle and sing more!  So here I am.
