Here are some photos from the Florida Archives showing early Florida cigar box banjos. These probably had three strings and didn't look any different than cigar box guitars--but they are labeled as "banjos" in the historical notes. :)
Notice how I am not historically accurate--looks like you are supposed to play the cigar box banjo barefooted.
