Recently an acquaintance was telling me that her 9 year old son is learning the guitar. She was expressing concern, however, that the kid does not have enough passion for the instrument, because she has to frequently remind him to practise. Hmm, I thought, that’s an interesting difference between the guitar and banjo. When I was a kid learning melodic style in the early 1960s, I would practise “Devil’s Dream” for all it was worth, to the point that my mother would yell at me to “stop practising scales.”
So there you go, people encourage you to practise the guitar but order you to stop practising the banjo.
