Broken Head :(

Posted by Pizza on Thursday, May 10, 2007

After my first lesson, my teacher mentioned the head was loose.  I tightened it and realized that something was not lined up correctly, and proceeded to actually make the problem worse in trying to fix it.

I am actually pretty surprised at how much stress it caused me.  Both in knowing I broke something I liked and in not having the time to just practice.  It had become a form of relaxation I was really enjoying.

I posted about it on the forums, and was almost expecting to get an electronic trouncing.  I even mentioned it on my second forum post there about an inbox full of "banjo killer!!" emails.  I was very pleasantly surprised to get just a fast response and such positive feedback.  Thanks again guys if you are reading this.

Now the challenge is to find another head over here in Japan.  I have my fingers crossed that I can be up and running within a week.

I hope you find a new head soon!  I know that I go through banjo withdrawl after only a day!  I can only imagine what you feel after a week!

"How can one not feel happy, when they hear a banjo play?!"

It happens, Chris, and it's just a part of learning the banjo. It will be a good experience for you, because you'll learn really a lot about your banjo when you take it apart to replace the head. Be sure and take careful measurements of the head before you go looking for a new one! If you have any questions, just ask and the folks here will help you out.

Thanks guys.  I called Scott Zimmerman, another member here who lives in Japan, but wasn't home.  One more try later tonight should do the trick.

Ohh poor you. I know what you mean. A day without a banjo is like a morning without coffe. when i am touring with theatergroups i always bring my banjo along, cause i cant stand to go without. Good luck in finding a new head. I come from denmark and that is not "banjo-country" either, so i know that finding banjos and asseories is not that easy and i heard many jokes from people who hates the banjo. The thing is that most of the people who hates the banjo havent really heard what you can do with it. In Denmark  banjo is a rythm-instrument in dixi-jazz and the instrument playd by the little boy in the movie "deliverence"
Keep up the good spirit. Best regards Lorix
