That song came to mind just now as I logged in for my first time here. I haven't played much of anything in my life. Today I came across a banjo though and for some reason I decided to purchase it. I suppose I have never really seen one for sale in the past, not that I was looking.
My first exposure to banjos was having a neighbor 5 doors down play every night as I was growing up. I didn't really put much stake in it, and actually really hated that during final exam week. Then the Muppet Movie came out. Kermit is about my most favorite actor of all time. The rainbow Connection will be the first song I ever play in full on the banjo.
Fast foreward 20 years and today I say this banjo for sale and bought it. I was actually planning on buying a guitar and taking guitar lessons in preparation for a battle of the bands competition this October. I can't play anything, and I am a bad singer, but I did manage to bring together a band of 10 great musicians to back me up. It is a one time deal and only about 4 or 5 songs worth, so I am sure I can get at least one a month down.
After the Rainbow Connection I do plan on working on the following song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwexWtFoCSs "All for one" by Blackmore's Night. Then on to a bit of Johnny Cash and Elvis for the battle of the bands.

Good luck with your new banjo!
You'll find that they are addicting! When you start, just take it slow and easy. The music should start to flow quite nicely for you as you start to feel the rythms of the song. A good DVD also helps, if you can't find a teacher!
