Enjoyment

Posted by John Herrington on Saturday, August 1, 2009

Paul Roberts recently wrote in one of the BHO forums on "What makes for a good banjo player?" Here is what he said: "I think it's 'enjoyment.' If you enjoy what you're doing, the rest will come."

Paul, as you usually do, you hit the nail on the head with me. I suppose each of us has different goals and ambitions in learning to play, but I play simply for the enjoyment of the experience. The banjo and I must meet together, each with our own agenda. If we are able to meld those agendas into one and run together in step, sharing the thrill and achievement, then who cares what we do. It's interesting to note that when that  happens, others notice and want to run with us!

I have two banjo friends at the present, my WL250 and my Prust 13 inch Minstrel. Neither is jealous of the other, but are simply there when I invite one to dance with me! I try to spread my interest to each of these fine ladies.

Rythmn, mechanics, entertainment, sure, men; these are important. It seems to me, however, that unless your banjo playing is for the market, where these are immensely important, what really matters is the personal thing, you and your banjo. Learn to share with each other. The other things will come!
Enjoy each other!

Yeah, thanks Paul, for stating the answer so simply. That's how I feel too!

Good morning John. I'm sorry I missed that post on what makes a good banjo player, I agree ,I would like to be good enough to play proffesionally,(which will never happen) But I'm having fun triying.

Thanks, John. The post was actually in the 4 string section. Might want to check it out.

Reckon we'll ever get together and play a little? Let me know if you ever have time to do so. Take care now and Happy pickin!

Hi John , yea it's going to be busy for awhile. I'm going to try to get to Nowoodstock this weekend and then the Bar-B-Q cookoff and Bluegrass festival in Worland the next weekend. Let me know if you can make either of those.
