Build yourself a parts banjo

Posted by Hazen on Saturday, May 16, 2009

I just got my new parts banjo back from the luthier.  I was in need of a good player due to an unfortunate series of events that left me without a good banjo.

Lewis Brandt supplied the neck and Dick Guggenheim supplies a block purple heart thin skirt two piece flange rim.  Tommy Joy in Belmont NC fretted the neck along with making the heel cut and the nut.  I know that banjo sound is subjective ,but man this banjo sounds great to me.  When he started putting this one together I think that there was some doubt in Tommy's mind ,but when I picked it up he was all smiles.  Nice  bright sound and lots of volume.  Nice to see what can happen when you put together a collection of great parts.  It is not a Gibson but those 7 lettters do not make me play any better anyway.

This project is really funny because I already had all of these parts just laying around the house and now I have a complete instrument that sounds better than any I have owned and most that I have played.

If you can use any of the guys that I have listed as being suppliers do it.  They are all first class folks.

Now for a maple resonator to make it all match.

I've got several great parts banjos as well. They're fun to put together and play.

I started assembling parts banjos several years ago and now that's all I play. I enjoy having an $800 sleeper that holds up with the best of them.

ditto... I wouldn't trade my current banjo, a parts banjo I built, for much of nothing :)

I will post some sound files as soon as I get a recorder set up. Now I just need to learn to play as good as the banjo sounds.
