I' m re-reading America's Instrument: The Banjo in the Ninteenth Century. Thank you, Jamie. I think I have a good analogy for the transformation of the banjo dutring this period. The image of the banjo changed from the instrument of slaves and the lower class to a mass instrument played in all levels of society. It would be as if everyone now came to believe that instead of learning the guitar or the violin they should learn to scratch records on turntables.
