Farewell to Cabin Fever

Posted by Mark Ralston on Sunday, February 15, 2009

Linda and I got back from a trip to Kentucky on Thursday.  We both needed some time away from work, and we were lucky to have some very pleasant, balmy weather.  Drove to Lexington then west on Rte 60.  The damage from the severe ice storm last week was incredible.... woodlots looked like war zones.  Quite a few of the old stone fences were crushed by fallen limbs.  Went to visit the Trappist Monastery in Gethsemane and bought some of their excellent fruit cake.

Drove to Berea by way of some back roads and checked out flea markets and antique co-ops.  I found a very nice bow & fiddle case and Linda bought a nice turquoise bracelet in Berea.  Went to the "first Tuesday" jam at the Appalachian Center at Berea College..... lots of fun, some very nice folks.  Did some research when I came home..... The Hutchins Library at Berea College (http://www.aca-dla.org/Berea/image/85.html) is responsible for a substantial share of the music that is posted on the Digital Appalachia website (http://www.aca-dla.org/), featuring Kentucky music.

Drove home by way of some more co-ops & fleas.  Bought a bunch of 78's including one by "McMichens Melody Men" (Columbia 15247-D).... figured this might be Clayton McMichen, and it turns out that the Melody Men were a more "civilized" iteration of the Skillet Lickers.  Riley Puckett's guitar is pretty unmistakeable.  Also found a double-LP "Old-Timey Concert" with Doc Watson, Clint Howard & Fred Price (Vanguard VSD 107/108), now need to figure out how to copy it onto my PC.
