Play with the exuberance of a three year old...

Posted by gkuchan on Thursday, December 18, 2008

A long long time ago for many of us, before we were told to use our inside voices, stop playing with our food and stop dancing around and stand still, a time before we were taught to be self conscious...we would sing just to sing (see Jingle Bells in the Music section)...Dance just to dance, just for the love of it...it didn't have to be anything, than just a dance, a song,a pure expression of uninhibited joy. But the we were told to sit still, sing this way, look that way...And we stopped having fun. Back in my previous life when I was pretending to be a Director, I would tell my actors that there is nothing more contagious than seeing someone loving what they do. Getting in touch with that inner three year old and finding the uninhibited joy in what they're doing at there very moment. What made me think of this was stopping off in a Starbucks to warm up with my three year old son. After getting our drinks, we were sitting there and he got a very quizzical look on his face. "Daddy? Everywhere we go there's music," he said. I sat there a moment and listened to the music they were playing, and responded, "Yes there was music at the grocery store, and music at the bookstore, and there is music here." "Daddy, why is nobody dancing?" He had a great point, and much to the dismay of the poor folks at that Starbucks, we danced. I guess what I'm trying to say is...Tab or no Tab, Scruggs, Old-Time, Jazz, Blues, Mexican Death Metal covers of Sinatra tunes...who cares! If we wanted rules we'd be fiddle players. It's called playing for a reason...So go play.

What a lovely piece you've written here, Grant.

I'm with you.  I think life should be like a musical and periodically, we should all get up on the tables at Starbucks and sing and dance.

What a lovely world that would be.....

i think mark twain said something about that. something like "live like it is your last day, love like youve never loved before and dance like nobody is watching. i probably screwed up that quote but its something like that. anybody know how it really goes?

found it!

"dance like nobody's watching, sing like nobody's listening, love like you've never been hurt, and live like its heaven on earth."
