I have just started playing the banjo---and do not like the use of the picks---
I have been a classical guitar player for over 15 years and find this to be most comfortable---is this a bad habit to get into--
most of the instructional items i have use fingerpicks and also have the ring finger resting on the drum head----what is the reason for the ring finger to be resting here?

I have gone back and forth with picks/ no picks and once i got used to the picks i found it to be that i play louder and more precise, might just be me though, now it feels weird not to use them. Do whatever feels good to you though. As far as resting fingers on the head, it is for more support when you play, more stability in your picking fingers is all.

The banjo can be fingerpicked and it sounds quite nice. On YouTube if you type in Ïrish Tenor¨ the first few videos are of a fellow in Ireland who plays Irish traditional music with his fingers. Very interesting stuff for someone like myself who´s always played with a pick.
