So I'm off in banjo-less Central America right now and I bought some mandolin strings in lieu of Irish banjo strings so I can keep playing my instrument down here. My question is, do mandolin strings work on an instrument with a scale such as an Irish tenor? I have a 17 fret Gold Tone, and I was told that mandolin strings would work. However, the mandolin has a much shorter scale, even though the strings are under more tension than on a banjo. So, any ideas?

I use mandolin strings all the time, they are the same thing as long as the gauge is the same as the ones you normally use and they are long enough to work. I prefer using the D'Addario sets, but any will do. For one thing you get two for one with a mandolin set and if you can find a bargain on the strings you are way ahead.
Loop end strings are loop end strings.

WIth the exception of fiddle strings and a couple of others, strings is strings. A mandolin string of the right length and gauge is a banjo string if it's on a banjo.
The problem for me is that of the four brands of mandolin string I use (LaBella, GHS, Adamas, and John Pearse), none of them are long enough to fit my banjo.
Just keep pickin' at it.

tim i used to use ernie ball mandolin strings for years, theyll be long enough.
