is this really a recording king model? say it ain't so Greg Rich....rolled brass tone ring? ohhh no....you've officially sold out ;)
pickin' aint easy.......

That may be a good thing
. For $419 put a cox rim, a tone ring, flange & hooks & nuts and use all the other parts. It would make a great conversion I would think.
At least now we know the original RK Tone Ring and the cutting of the rim is worth $600 ![]()
For that price I'm gonna convert me one and Huberize it.

Yeah, definately sold out. Copying Gibson again!

Look at it in the light of competing with a Goodtime or low end Gold Tone or the Rovers and Hondos and it doesn't seem all that bad. A nice new option for a new picker who doesn't want to sink a fortune into a hobby he might not continue.

At that price, it might be worth considering for an entry-level openback. Looks a lot more substantial than the $300 ones. Just remove the resonator & flange, since it's has a shoe-based tension-hook system.

yeah but the inlay is crappy on the peghead....the recording king logo looks like its glued and pasted on....I mean why make a cheap banjo that will just reflect poorly on the upper end ones that are great banjos.....I just don't agree with it....there are a lot of 300-600 banjos....but the RK's that are in that 1000-1500 range, really stand out and there are not alot in that market so they kinda had there own niche.....now...BAM!....gotta make a crappy one.....BOOOO! BOOOO!
pickin' aint easy.......

I've seen these beasties up close and personal and they aren't that bad in terms of fit and finish and as Bill notes they have potential in the open back arena. It sure beats the daylights out of my old JB 100! ![]()

I like the unbound peg head.

No thanks on an bluegrass banjo "open-backed". While the RK open backs are nice, we want our own neck, a wider neck, and a dowell stick (or fake dowell that covers rod), and our own inlays...Don't we, you clawhammer layers? Brad
May not the incidence of success, nor the pretense of retirement-Lessen the want of enlightenment.

Considering the "Songster" is priced to compete with banjos like the Goodtimes and the Gold Tone CC-100R I think the criticisms are misplaced. Lots of companies try to cover a wide range of price points in order to allow more people the opportunity join their family.
Why not whine and complain because Gibson made those low-end -1, -2 and -11 banjos with the tone hoops way back when?
There actually are people who would like to have the option of owning one banjo that could be used as both and open-back and resonator banjo as the need arises. If you don't want one you aren't the target market.

I'd like to hear a bit more about this RK-R20 model and it's planned changes, especially from Greg Rich, since I bought one and started taking lessons a few weeks ago (one of the 30 that are "history?"). Looking back through this and related threads, it seems that there are some concerns about the (sort-of-orange-colored) instrument that I purchased.
I'm a beginner and it's my first banjo and I like it. That's good enough I guess.
Gibson Gangsta - Posted - 05/10/2007: 09:36:16
goldrun....its nothing "WRONG" with your banjo, RK had a couple of early RK80s come out with this "orange" finish and the peghead was supposed to have a fluer-de-lise inlay...not this......so you see, its different than what greg told us, and here, at the BHO, we argue over the most minute details and basically pick everything to pieces (per example: I'm now in a fued with scott zimmerman b/c he thinks he's the ONLY person in the world to go to china) so you see....theres nothing "wrong" with it persay.....
pickin' aint easy.......

BHO isn't a place to carry on a "fued" so it ends here and now...I hope you get my drift.

This name calling and sniping ends here. I'm tired of writing these warnings...This is the last warning on this subject.
