I'm finding what I feel is the difference between middle/index fingers is this. Mostly I've only been a bum-ditty in the instruction I've had. Perlman's book takes quite a while to get on with double/drop thumbing. I think the index is fine there. I've been working with Dan's Clawless book and have gone straight to double/drop thumbing. I find that using the middle for drop thumbing gives me better access to the string my thumb is aiming for. My index kind of gets in the way here. And using the middle more, I'm starting to like it.

As pretty much everyone will tell you--"whatever works." After you become proficient, you may well find that middle on the 1st string, index on the inside strings will work well for you too. But I think it's a trickier way to begin.
