How to upload photos to your Home Page

Lately I've seen quite a few posts in several forums where folks indicate they don't understand how to post photos to their home page. Members jump in with tips, but eventually those go down the list and are lost to view.

I notice there are sticky topics for other common procedures, but none for this one. Based on what I've seen recently, I think there's a real need for it. So I put on my techwriter's hat and wrote this, which I hope the mods will see fit to make sticky, and which I hope helps you if you've found yourself baffled about uploading photos.

1. Prepare your photos

Photos must be in "JPEG" format. Most digital cameras save images in this format. If you are scanning prints, be sure to save in this format.

Many digital cameras and scanners save photos in a very large size (meaning width and height) and maybe also at a high resolution (sometimes called 'quality").
Large dimensions and high resolution/quality make for a large file size which you don't really need when posting to the BHO. Large files take a long time
to load, and eat up your storage allowance.

If your photos are over 800 x 600 pixels, you should consider reducing them to this size or smaller (maybe 640 x 480). Preserve your originals by making
copies to post on the BHO and reduce the copies. A good free program for doing this is Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/. Use this
to reduce the image size (press Ctrl + R) and then save it with a quality of 60 (generally good enough for the web).

2. About Photo Albums

Every BHO member starts with one photo album named Default Album. All photos you upload will appear in this album unless your create some other album(s)
and specify which one the uploaded photo(s) should appear in. If you have multiple photos that all relate to the same thing (a banjo, your vacation, your
grandkids, whatever...) you might want to create an album for them. You have to create the album first before you start uploading photos.

You might want to create a folder named BHO Default Album on your computer which corresponds to your Default Album on BHO, and sub-folders under it which
correspond to any other albums you created (or will create) on BHO. This will help you organize your photos before you upload them. When making copies of large
photos to reduce in size and quality, you can store them there.

The next sections in this post describe step-by step how to upload photos to your BHO photo album(s) and also how to create a new photo album.

3. Uploading Photos Step-by-Step

OK, let's assume you read the previous 2 sections and you have one or more photos stored on your computer that you want to upload to your BHO photos. Let's
also assume you are already logged in to your BHO member account and are looking at your Home Page.

The process is simple: you browse to a JPEG file stored on your computer and select it, then you optionally enter some text describing the photo, after which you
specify which photo album it should appear in. Here's the procedure step-by-step.

To upload one or more photos:

  1. On your Home Page, click Photos (the right-most link above your avatar image).

Your default Photo Album page appears:

  2. Click the Upload New Photos button. The Your Photo Albums screen appears listing all your current photo albums:

  3. If you want to upload your photo(s) into an album that doesn't yet exist, skip to the section below titled Creating a New Photo Album, follow
the instructions there, then return here and go to the next step.

  4. On the Your Photo Albums page, click the Upload Photos button. A form appears which you can use to specify up to 5 photos to upload.

  5. Click the Browse button to the right of the first text box which is labeled JPEG File*:. Your computer's standard file selection
    dialog window appears.

  6. Use the dialog window to navigate to the folder where you have stored the photo(s) you want to upload and select a JPEG image file to be uploaded by
clicking on the file name. (The file should have a .jpg file extension if your computer is configured to display file extensions). Click the
Open button in the dialog window. The complete "path" to the image file appears in the text box.

  7. Optionally enter some text in the boxes labeled Photo Title and Caption. You don't have to, but doing so helps other members to
understand what the photo shows or is about.

  8. If you want the specified photo to appear in an album other than Default Album, select the desired album in the Album drop-down list.

  9. If you want to upload another photo now, repeat steps 5 - 8 in the next section of the form (which has a slightly different color than the first). You
can specify up to 5 photos to upload at once.

  10. When you are ready to upload your photo(s) to BHO, click the Upload Photos button at the top of the form (you may have to scroll the form
    upward to see the button).

  11. Wait... be patient! When your photos have all uploaded a confirmation screen will appear which gives you the choice of uploading more photos
    or viewing your photos.

That's all there is to uploading photos to share with other BHO members.

4. Creating a New Photo Album

To create a new photo album:

  1. When you are looking at the Your Photo Albums screen you will see a link Create New Photo Album.

Click on it. The Photo Albums screen appears.

  2. Type a name for the new album in the Album Title box and click the save button. You are taken back to the Your Photo Albums screen.

I followed the directions and tried it three times. Off to the right there's a big grey box that says, "Ironmountainboy's Photo Album" and under it, it say "No photos available in this album". No matter what I click on, I am not offered any chices to upload photos.

I also have not been able to file a review of a new banjo I just received.
When I click on the submit review, it asks me to log in again, but does not accept my user name nor password. This is not an easy website to navigate through. I've tried for three days to upload photos and leave a review but have been frustrated at every attempt.

What does this mean? I don't understand.

It sounds like you are having problems with the site working for you in general. I'm not a mod or an administrator, so I don't know why links don't work for you, or why you can't log in to reviews. Try making a separate post in this forum describing your problems... it's more likely to be seen and responded to by someone who might be able to help get you going.

I tested my instructions step by step on Firefox 1.5, Internet Explorer 6.0 and 7.0, and Opera 9 running on Windows XP Professional over 2 different internet connections before posting so I'm pretty confident they are correct if the site is working properly.

ironmountainboy,

You have to allow scripting for all the BHO-related sites. If you have something blocking pop-ups or javascript, it won't work. The sites in my "allow" window are banjohangout.org and banjohangout.ws.

I was dead in the water, just like you, until I allowed the banjohangout.ws site.

The login and password are stored with cookies, so you have to allow BHO to place those, too.

I'm paranoid as all getout, but I've allowed BHO to run scripts and place cookies, and so far my computer hasn't blown up

edit: Oh, and welcome to the Hangout!!! Don't fret, somebody here will have had the same problems, and can get you sorted out. Don't give up

Is it possible to change the order of my photos? If so, how do I do it? Thanks.

Jim-
I haven't found any way to do that short of deleting them and re-uploading in a different order. That's OK unless you have comments on some of them that you want to preserve.

If I remember right, the photo you upload first appears last in the display order of a given album. I found that a little surprising and hard to get used to. If there's a time or other sequence to a set of photos, you have to be careful about the order in which you upload them.

Control over the display of photos in an album would be a nice feature, imo.

I am not 100% sure, but I think the avatar image has to be jpeg format as opposed to GIF or something else. If you haven't already, try converting your avatar to jpeg (free Irfanview program will do it)

I know how to post pics on my homepage, but when I transfer those pics to a post, the image is so large it causes the margins to expand. Today I tried www.tinypic.com/index.php hoping that the posted pics would not have an effect on the margins. Unfortunately, the margins ended up even wider than the other way.

Back to the avatar problem, the real question is, "What do I do?" I see no link or feed that says "Upload Photo to Avatar." What am I missing?

You add an avatar photo on your BHO profile page:

1. When you are logged in, look at the left sidebar and find a drop-down list that says "Choose Action"

2. In that list, choose "Edit Your Profile"

3. On your profile page, look to the right for a box labeled "Profile Photo" (i.e , not "avatar"). There's a box inset there labeled "Upload new photo".

4. Click the Browse button and select the image on your computer that you want to use for your avatar. It has to be stored on your comuter - you can't use one that's on the internet (e.g. on PhotoBucket, etc.)

5. After you select an image, click UPLOAD IMAGE

Hope this helps!

1879, you have to get the photo's address from "Properties."

Each photo in your gallery has arrows under it. Click left or right, and your photo will move that direction in your gallery by once space.
