Yeah, well so do I. Okay, I've been playing about a year and a half. I can play a few songs up to the CD speed and I'm enjoying myself beyond belief.
You know those licks that you hear about? Well, they mean utterly different things depending on what song you're playing. I KNEW that and I've heard that.
I wrote about "where the HELL did that come from" about a song I've heard my whole life and have heard probably literally over a thousand times in the past 6 months. There's a whole subtext in there that is subtle as all get out.
Cripple Creek? Well, you know that slide you're doing? You're going to do that very slide for about 80% of the songs you do in Bluegrass. Guess what, it's going to need to sound differently about five completely different ways.
SLOW THE HELL DOWN. You know a few songs? Great (I mean that) that's a kick in the pants and lets you play a bit. Now go back and play those songs again at about 40% of the speed you're playing them now and see if you can pick up where the melody is supposed to be and see if you can bring it out at that slow-as-hell speed. It'll kick your butt ![]()
Yeah, I'm going back and rethinking a lot of those stupid pull-offs, slides, and hammer ons. You want a for instance? Go look at the tab for Shuckin' The Corn. Recognize those? Yup, mostly the same as from Foggy Mountain Breakdown and Cripple Creek. They mean something completely different here. Woof.
Yes, I'm enjoying the heck out of it, there is more here than I thought even though I've played instruments all my life. Wow!

Oh, you're just learning your first slide? Well, take your time and make sure it sounds like a stair step without the bump of the fret. You'll thank me.
Pull off? Don't sweat it. It will sound like hell and you'll hit the other string all the time. SLOW DOWN and don't try to be as elaborate in your movements, you don't need that.
