Joao (Juan) Gilberto played with Stan Getz and Dave Brubeck. He wrote "The Girl from Ipenema." Most of his is music is classed as Brazilia: Sambo and Bossa Nova. I was wondering if anyone here has tried adapting the Spanish Guitar to banjo.

Living in the Chicagoland area can have an advantage. I've had the fortune to jam with a fellow that taught music in Mexico and he has patiently tried to help me with a few Samba licks.

Just curious if anyone has tinkered with this music

Go on YouTube and look up "banjo samba". There's this video of a very talented (and attractive) woman playing samba on a five-string banjo and singing. Really neat stuff!

I went to Youtube, typed in "banjo samba" and got a song called "London, London" by an artist named Mercedezzz, aka Devendra Banhart. Wonder if this is the same Mercedes that Jody spoke of ?

The only brazileño tune I do is Tico Tico, a 1940's samba. I play it on button accordion and have only tried it on tenor banjo a few times.

I stumbled onto your stuff on youtube about a week ago. Great stuff! I love Brazilian music (Black Orpheus soundtack is probably my all-time favorite), and I love banjo, so what better than to combine them?

It looks like you are playing a tenor banjo. Have you considered trying plectrum banjo?

As for me, I'm a beginning 5-string player, but I am collecting parts to assemble a plectrum banjo. For my playing I think I will prefer the slightly more mellow that I expect from the plectrum banjo compared to the tenor, and the fingering will be identical to the 5-string, so it will be easier to learn. I hope to try some Brazilian pieces on the plectrum at some point.

The banjo itself is a tenor but I play it in plectrum tuning. The only book I could find when I got it was for 5-string.
