Just wondering if anyone has tried out the Hobart Smith tabs included with the "In Sacred Trust" album. I showed it to my wife while listening to "Wabash Blues." I said, "Hey, I can learn this."
She, a supportive but realistic spouse, answered "Suuuuuuure you could."
I just got the album 2 days ago, and I'm averaging 2 listens a day, but just seeing if anyone has taken on the two tunes tabbed out in the liner notes. (Too bad they didn't do this with either of the Roscoe Holcomb albums from Smithsonian!)

No, but thank you for reminding me that they are there. I just picked this up two months ago and didn't glance to much through the booklet yet..

Old observant here has never pulled the booklet from the cd cover. Thanks for the heads up.
The Whiskey Before Breakfast variations and a few tunes in "F" tuning are now available on the web at:

farka,
to link this thread to another on whether OT banjo should be simple
take a listen to Hobart's version of The Cuckoo on that CD...taint simple at all!...but a wonderful solo banjo piece

Yeah, I don't hold out a lot of hope for playing like that. I might try to "dumb it down" to my hands in a straight thumping style, didn't know if anyone had experimented with that yet.

Well, I know a banjo player who plays great three finger style and his own fake clawhammer, where he doesn't hit the fifth string at all. He picked Last Chance up off that album, showed it to me in his style, I put it into straight clawhammer, added my own embelshments here and there. Then, I heard a few seconds of Hobart's version on Amazon and added the pluck on the first string. Other than that, I had it about the same. I can play it the same at same speed, but not nearly as beautiful.

They're basically photos of a tab someone did. Go through the pages one at a time.

as I recall there are only tabs to a couple of the tunes and I think that they were written out by Fleming Brown, the gentelman that recorded Hobart in his basement...the tapes of which are the source of "In Sacred Trust"
