I'm noticing that when I am playing certain chord shapes, namely the first position C shape, my fretting ring finger will straighten out. It becomes especially apparent when I'm also fretting with my pinky in this shape. Is this normal or evidence of bad technique? I really tried to isolate it and convince my hand to behave otherwise, but to no avail.

Does your ring finger straighten out to the point where you can't fret with it? If so, yes, you need to work on that problem.

I can still fret with it, and it doesn’t lock up or anything. It just loses the slight bend at the knuckle closest to the nail that I’m used to.

If it's not interferring with your playing, I wouldn't worry about it. If it does start interferring, then you'll need to see what's causing it to do that. Might mean a trip to the doctor to diagnose and (hopefully) correct the problem.
