Here in southeastern MA too.
I've already had to go through the antibiotics routine after one of those little suckers got me a month ago.
Lyme disease did a job on my neighbor. Nothing to fool around with.

We supposedly have a tick problem, but so far I haven't seen one. None on the poodle and maybe that's because I have a 6' metal fence around the back yard and none of the neighbor dogs can get in. I occasionally see a stray cat and/or a squirrel but so far they haven't left any ticks.

Before 1918 this area [Lynn Valley] had the biggest trees in the world, including the Redwood forest. There are still thousands of second growth trees here. What is really strange is that in the 47 years we have been surrounded with these trees and I've never heard of any person or dog getting a tick. [ maybe I need to get out more often.]

Not a fan of the little buggers and they say they are bad here this year, but I personally have not had any on me, but haven’t been in da woods a whole lot ………….yet!!!

After posting that I hadn't had any ticks in my yard, guess what? I found one crawling on my sock! Grabbed that little sucker and squashed it. Checked the poodle to see if there were any more and couldn't find any. Will keep a lookout for more. I figure it's either that feral cat that I've seen in the back yard or those blasted squirrels that are bringing them in.

A friend of mine suffered from some weird affliction several years ago that the doctors could not figure out at all. He lost weight, could not eat, was very sick. Finally he found a specialist who identified the condition (which I can't recall the name of now) which is caused by a tick, the effect is you can no longer metabolize red meats among the weird effects. He's doing much better now with the help of that specialist but he still cannot eat meat.

Yeah those things can be pretty wicked. And there a a whole lot of 'em here too...

I posted above about that condition a friend of mind got from a tick. Well, by coincidence, I was listening to the radio yesterday and they had an extensive report about the Lone Star Tick and alpha-gal syndrome, which I'm pretty sure is what he has. (It is. I just confirmed with him by txt). This almost killed him until he found a doctor familiar with the condition. This guy I know runs a very well known jam session every Friday in Chesnee SC.



The Lone Star tick used to just hang out in the southeast, Now, since weather is hotter and warmer going further north, so has the tick. It's all the way up to Maine now.



Here is an article in New Yorker magazine which was referenced by that radio show, telling all about this condition. Not everyone who gets a bite will get sick, very few in fact, but those who do it can be a doozie.

Grandsons came in last night and 2 of em were loaded with tiny ticks.
Hopefully we got em all. Skeeters are pretty bad right now too, worse than years past.

Supposedly mice are major carriers of ticks. I have had a few out at the garden this year but not any more than normal.

When I found that article about Lone STar Ticks and made the above post this morning, I texted KT who has suffered from this condition and gave him a link to that article I linked to above.

He texted me a few minutes ago, and I thought I'd share his text to me:

 

"I've had time to read that article. It's the best and latest info I've seen out yet.

You can believe everything you read or heard about AGS. I know I've had this since the mid '80s, with all the symptoms at some point in time.

I can't eat meat or dairy and smelling meat cooking is as bad or worse than eating meat.

Thanks for sharing. This is life changing and no fun whatsoever."
