Sticker shock when it comes to cars is not new. Seems like every time you shop for parts, batteries, anything for the car or truck, the price has gone up, up, up.

I went and got an oil change a week or so ago. The bill was $92. I was surprised. Daughter says that's not a bad price. I haven't had to pay for an oil change in several years, as that went along with the warranty. Unfortunately, they don't offer that perk any more.

You paid for all those oil changes in advance.

I change my own oil and filter and it still costs about what the dealers charge and I don't rotate the tires.  I only do it because of the pain in the neck to take it to a dfealer and either leave it or wait for it.  I had a 7:30 appointment at a dealership for my new car (which came with one oil and filter change) this past March and did not get out of thre until 10:30.  I'll take it back next March for a new transmission fluid filter, but will have to pay for the oil change.

Check out Dakota Lithium batteries. A friend just put 3 into his boat, and the cost was close to $4000....but he says they're the best. At that price, they better be....

How about tires?

I had to replace a tire on the new car I bought a year ago. I got it from Tire Rack for $275 plus $32 for Midas to do the installation. My car dealer had quoted an installed price of $392.

I have good luck with Ever Start from Wal-Mart. Mine on my truck was bought 2013.

Ironically, the battery went out in my 2019 Tahoe yesterday. $265 for a new battery with exchange of old one. Totally unbelievable but what can you do? They got you coming and going.

slammer - Posted - 06/26/2026:  03:18:51

There are really only 3 or 4 automotive batteries manufacturers in the U.S.
I’ve also had good luck with batteries from Walmart Ever Start batteries. Warranty is just as good as any I believe.
Slammer!!!

I have been buying Interstate batteries from Costco ..... not cheap there either but probably saving a few bucks.

1935tb-11 - Posted - 06/27/2026:  13:26:01

clarios is the main manufacturer of die hard and ever start batteries just to name a few....
and thy also build batteries for interstate now ,,they just put their green label on the like die hard and ever start.
clarios is a monster battery company. 18,000 plus people in 100 countries.

Batteries can be a bit of a racket. You will notice that a brand name will often offer 2 or 3 levels of price and quality. The reality is that grades 1,2, and 3 are the same battery but with more or less months included on the warranty.

Re. "... the battery was gone.. 5 years old so it was time.... ".  I don't/didn't keep particularly good records of such things, but off the top of my noggin, I'd be disappointed if a battery only lasts 5 years.

[Twenty years farming with maybe 15ish machines* with batteries ... sounds like a l-o-t of batteries. sad ]

* Now down to only one ... a '21 Grand Cherokee.  But, but, but, "progress" dictates that they put it under the front passenger seat, so if/when the time comes I might have to venture into uncharted territory ... paying [additional??] $$$ to swap a battery. sad

I sadly found out I couldn't use an old-fashioned battery from Wal-Mart when my 2018 Hyundai needed one.
I had to spend $285 at O'Reilly's.They installed it and gave me full replacement for 4 years.

I was in wally world the other day and checked the price on one for my truck, it's Group 24 or 25, it was 117 plus tax which is not bad.
