Dr. Pepper has always reminded me of the all-but-nauseating “cherry” cough syrup I had to take on occasion as a kid. It’s a soda I simply cannot drink.

When I was in grade school, there was a rumor going around that it was carbonated prune juice. (Does anyone else here remember that one?)

When I was a Junior physics, undergraduate at the University of Kentucky I had a course taught by a Professor ... Dr. Pepper.
He assigned me a laboratory challenge ... to determine the half life of Radium-226 (approximately 1,600 years).
As I sit waiting for a thousand years or so to pass. He told me that as a little boy he "knew he was gonna have to get a doctorate in something."
He became "Dr. Pepper".
I got a B in the project.

I remember seeing this little film on tv, which got released around the time Bill made that commercial. The little film was intended to "boost" attention to the commercial I guess. An early music video! I can't remember where exactly on TV the film ran, I don't think TNN cable was running then (?) so it might have been on network news or maybe PBS' broadcasts of the Opry, but it took me a LONG time to see the actual commercial in a normal tv broadcast. Might have been TNN I suppose. Crook & Chase would have loved this.
I remember at the time how unsuited this song was to bluegrass and Monroe. The Blue Grass Boys did an OK job picking it, but Bill's voice seemed very tentative, especially on the higher notes where he had none of his usual confidence and power. Even with Kenny Baker shoveling a path through the snow for Bill to find the melody.
All I could think was that whoever selected Monroe and bluegrass for this commercial simply didn't know music very well. Totally a "gimmick".
I might have bought one can of Dr Pepper because of this commercial.
I'm sure Acuff sold thousands more bottles of RC Cola than Monroe sold of Dr. Pepper!
