I have an old Ode long neck banjo on which its aluminum rim was milled to create a "flathead tone ring-like" situation in lieu of a discrete tone ring. Many other aluminum pot Ode Longnecks have rims that were similarly fashioned as archtops.

I was wondering if there was a general preference for the "archtop" or "flathead" versions of these old Ode Longnecks.

Thanks for your help.

Not that I ever heard about. It just wasn’t an issue. I think most of those Odes were owned and played by folks who were primarily singers; likely that slight tonal differences were not big concerns to them.
