Okay folks,, I’m taking a survey for Hokky Polestars.com ,, ;-)
…. how many of you banjo pickers in the southeastern States are following the Carolina Hurricanes as they take on the Montreal Canadiens (yes, with an “e”) in the NHL playoffs semi-finals?
(might be a slim response in NASCAR country on Memorial Day.....)

Chuck, there are lots of hockey fans down here. There are a bunch in Atlanta because the Calgary Flames were here for about 10 years in the early 70's. But I am not sure that the former Flames fans are Hurricane fans ....... more likely Calgary fans. I still do not understand why they left Atlanta, as they were wildly popular ....... but maybe only wildly popular among not enough fans. Tom Cousins, a real estate developer, whom my golf course architects society gave our highest award (Donald Ross Award), brought the team to Atlanta and was their owner. He was a good guy!

John, as you know, the NHL tried Atlanta again with the Thrashers (now the Winnipeg Jets ,, Winnipeg’s original Jets moved to Arizona and became the Coyotes,, & couldn’t get enough support and are now the Utah Mammoth) but the Thrashers didn’t last long either, even though ex-Braves pitchers John Smoltz and Tom Glavine lobbied hard to keep them there. However, the Carolinas seem to support the Canes enthusiastically, maybe even up to Emporia, Virginia ;-)
p.s. , I used to think Las Vegas and hockey was an oxymoron,, JT the folks there proved me wrong. Then again Canucks like Rich Little, Paul Anka, Anne Murray, and Celine Dion had long-standing gigs there (sans banjo, unfortunately)

Chuck ...... since both you and I are familiar with truck stops all over the country, did you ever stop at the Sadler's Plaza (think that is what it is called) in Emopria? I don't remember if it was for big rigs like yours, but probably was. I always liked Eliot Sadler when he was driving in NASCAR.

the canes have sold out every home game for several seasons... and it doesn't appear to be slowing down. so its a big deal down here in dixie land !!!!

Yep, sure did, John. I used to haul pork out of Winnipeg to Boar's Head packers in Jarrat, VA. I'd often grab some fried chicken & a few winks at Sadler's.
