I just learned this. What sad news. Kinney was an extremely important fellow in our banjo culture and with a wealth of knowledge. I have his book on Charlie Poole which is a great read. It was very hard to find. Apparently they are gonna do a second printing this year according to his obituary.
I didn’t know him but kinda felt like I did after reading, and listening to all his recorded material. The videos that feature him discussing Poole and old time music are some of my absolute favorite on YouTube.
He was also a teacher of history at college, which I was unaware of. He was a rich character for sure and I know he will be missed.
Here is the obituary for him.

Praying for his family.

Last time I saw Kinney I played some music with him in The Basset community area. He was kin to Posie Rorrer that played in Charlie Pooles band. He was also kin to Charlie Poole thru marriage.
