I had a chance to see Snuffy shortly before he died At andrew jackson state park.
I did see Randy Lucas and I believe he was playing snuffy's 4.
I regret not going to see Snuffy the next day.

Very cool, Butch! When I was a young star-banjo-struck fan I phoned Snuffy’s house one day just to say howdy but his wife said he was sleeping.
So I phoned J.D. Crowe’s house and he answered but said he was busy + could I phone back tomorrow? So I did that & he chatted with me for half an hour.
(I never did phone Mr. Butch,, lucky him…)

Butch, What did Snuffy not have worked out that Earl put in that brought him to the level of perfecting it?

I don't think Butch rated them in that order from things he has said --they were both magical imo--of course Earl was stronger smoother and faster--that comes under fingers they were blessed with--I think their self imposed rules were pretty similar--
not to start a ruckus --there is room for everyone to have their own assessment--
