One time, years ago, I was driving north towards Boston on Route 24, just south of the I-93 interchange. A car just ahead of me lost a wheel - which actually PASSED the car it came from before bouncing into the woods.

So: a wheel traveling at the same speed as the car from which it separated actually gained significant speed. I'm still trying to figure out the physics of how THAT happened!

I was installing a roof on the one story vestibule of a Taco Bell when a wheel flew off of a car and bounced off the front wall of the building and came within one foot of hitting me. My lucky day!

What happened to us wasn't a wheel coming off a car, but a 50 gallon barrel that came off of a truck. That darned barrel tumbled and rolled right toward our motorhome and there was no dodging it, just a quick prayer that it wouldn't hit the windshield. It didn't, but it came entirely too close.

Back in the 70s my brother lost a hubcap from his car while driving home from the movies. We went back to the place where he thought it might be--in a ditch near a pot hole. A man came out of his house and asked if we needed any help. We told him about the hubcap. He took us into his shed where there were over a hundred hubcaps hanging on the walls and on the floor. We found his hubcap.

One of the tire recaps on my semi let go and flew off into the left passing lane on the Indiana Tpk years ago, just missing a car who had to brake hard. Old timers used to drive only at night on hot sunmer days.  I got 2 flats in southern Nevada at the same time when the temps were 105*F

several years ago ,,, early 2000s when me and my wife were still dating... we were heading south on hwy 52 (4 lane) in winston salem , we were in her honda crv, starting around a downhill turn to the left,, when all of the sudden this truck with a shipping container trailer heading north curbs up against the jersey barrier and flips over . the trailer comes down on our side blocking both lanes. lucky for us i was able to jerk the wheel to the right and jump a curb and get off on a ramp.. but several cars in front of me were not so lucky. he took out about 6 or 7 cars before stopping.
got my attention real quick.... nothing like a shipping container sliding towards you on the highway at 60 mph.

A guy from an hour west of us posted this to Fb this a.m. 

His commentary: "I would say it’s been a bit breezy here. This culvert that was sitting by the highway yesterday and had washed out. Blew across the field through the ditch on my road up and over and into the field resting in my tree line. That would have been a surprise if a guy was driving down the road and seeing that headed your way. lol."

I lost the rear driver’s side wheel on my Dodge diesel years ago driving in to work one morning.

Thankfully I was on a back country road with no other vehicles anywhere in sight.

I felt the truck shimmy, coming around a curve and then WHAM!!! It slammed down on the road and tilted sideways…scared the living daylights out of me.

Then I saw the wheel go bouncing off into a swamp. That was the hardest part, getting that wheel back…I had to wade out into waist deep muck and slime….glad I was still in my 20’s.

Update on the culvert the guy found in the treeline at the edge of his field ^^ ....

"Well last time this culvert blew across the field up my ditch over my road and ended up in my tree line. Dept of Highways came and retrieved it and took it back  Well it’s been missing for a few days from its location along the highway. Well I found it again except this time it’s over 1 mile away... ."

I dunno the exact location of the poster's ^^  farm in relation to Yorkton.   I'll concede there are some flat stretches, however the all-knowing Google says:

Last October while on my way to TOGUS (60 miles away) to get on their 6 am VA to Boston shuttle.
An open back truck in front of me lost a 5 gallon gas can (plastic) and that gas can slid under the middle of my car and caused nearly 4k damage to my Hyundai Accent.
Thank God for AAA.
